A fresh year often feels like a blank canvas—a chance to start anew. You may want to search out LinkedIn for the post by Amos Ologunleko on “New Beginnings”. My question today, however, is how you are setting yourself and/or your team up for success this year?
For many in the corporate world, the performance management systems often provide a guide to reset and focus, especially when done the right way. This is because it provides the necessary clarity upfront to shape once year’s performance trajectory.
Goal-setting isn’t just a task; it’s the foundation of alignment, purpose, and results. Without clear, aligned expectations, you risk leaving your team (and yourself) a short end of the stick.
Here’s a quick guide that’s served me well over the years:
1. Co-Create the Goals:
Collaborate with your team to define goals. Autonomy breeds ownership, and when people feel involved, they are more likely to commit. Avoid dictating expectations—encourage innovation and joint problem-solving.
2. Make It SMART:
Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Clarity here is non-negotiable to ensure accountability and focus.
3. Discuss the How:
Don’t skip this critical step! Provide clarity on the approach, preferred methods, or key considerations. Address potential challenges upfront to avoid ambiguity and misalignment later.
4. Highlight the Benefits:
Answer the question: What’s in it for your team? Make sure they see the value in their efforts and find ways to incentivize the right behaviors and results.
5. Review Regularly:
Goals aren’t static. Use regular check-ins—perhaps quarterly—to review progress, analyze data, and adjust where needed. This ensures relevance and helps you intervene proactively. Also, encourage independent reviews by both you and your team before group discussions to streamline communication and address misalignments.
Goal-setting isn’t just about achieving targets; it’s about building a motivated, high-performing team that thrives on clarity and purpose. So do it right this time, coincidentally, I am in the middle of mine!
Here’s to a prosperous and productive 2025! Let’s start strong and keep the momentum going. See you on the next one.
Do you like my shoes? 😃
